Sherry Dyanne is a soul and jazz singer with a very distinctive retro sound. This sound teleports you to the days of Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, home cooked apple pie and nostalgic jazz clubs. Sherry has a stunning live reputation and has now released her first album ‘Sing me a song’. This debut hosts a selection self-written, beautiful songs and long forgotten tracks from yesteryear. Sherry’s love for authenticity in life and music, has succeeded in creating a timeless atmosphere on this heartfelt album.

Sherry is a jazz and soul singer, born in Amsterdam from a mix of Caribbean blood. Although Sherry Dyanne sounds like an artist name, it is not. Sherry: ”These names were given to me by my beloved parents. My father likes nicknames and chose my first name: Sherry from chérie. My mother chose my second name Dyanne. She had the feeling I would be an artist and she thought Dyanne was a good artist name.”

Stax & Motown

Sherry grew up with two younger brothers in a family that loves music. “At home music was just as important as water. My father played a lot of records of Tom Jones, Aretha Franklin, Kenny Rogers, Motown and Caribbean music, but also Dutch artists like André Hazes and Drukwerk. “I   could even dance before I could walk! I would stand on my fathers feet and then we danced the Salsa. That was a great time.”

Maths & Erykah Badu

Despite of here love for music Sherry choose, believe it or not, to be a math teacher. “At school math was my favourite class. And you know what, math is much closer to music then you think. All big musicians from the past are brilliant mathematicians. The mechanism of communicating and music, musical notation, is very mathematical.” Sherry was a teacher on a college in Amsterdam. Students sometimes asked Sherry to sing and that made everybody happy!

During that same period Sherry was asked to perform in the qualifying round of the television program ‘The Soundmixshow’. She sang Tyrone from Erykah Badu and she was astonished when she was selected to go to the next round. Better yet, she was the winner up in the final! Since that moment Sherry made here own sound and created her own style with great success!

In 2008 Sherry stopped teaching and chose to pursue her musical career. She shared the stage with Michael Franti, Candy Dulfer, Trijntje Oosterhuis and George Duke. Sherry also preformed at several jazzfestivals like North Sea Jazz and The Hague Jazz.

Frank Sinatra en Dinah Washington

Sherry her style is a combination between the present and the past, jazz and soul. “I love passion and craftsmanship, you can hear that in music. Just take a look and listen to Frank Sinatra, the way he sings and dances is so pure. That’s why I feel related with the music that is made between the twenties and the seventies. The music was authentic and daring. More sources of inspiration for me are Otis Redding, Billie Holiday and Ramón Valle.” Sherry sounds like she was born in the same period as Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. Sherry here look is also inspired from an earlier period. “My absolute style icon is the Hollywood performer and singer Dorothy Dandridge. She had a great, very feminine and timeless style.”

Own craftsmanship

Here own album was Sherry here greatest dream. She wanted to make an album with a mix of own songs and covers. For the covers she chose songs that weren’t well known, but beautiful, long forgotten jazz- and soul numbers. Like ‘Come on a my house’, a song originally sung by the American singer and actrice Rosemary Clooney but later also performed by jazz singer Della Reese.

For the recording of here debut album ‘Sing me a song’ Sherry picked the Flowriders studio in Amsterdam where they work with vintage recording equipment and instruments for the authentic sound. She was responsible for the whole production of the album, without interference of a record label. “I never recorded an album before and when you are woking with others you are inclined to follow their advice. I wanted to discover myself on a musical level and as a singer. I didn’t want to be influenced by others, because this album had to be purely Sherry Dyanne. That doesn’t mean that I will not work with other people in the future, but for now I grabbed the change to discover my own style, in a very natural way.”

Happy Jazz

What you can hear on ‘Sing me a song’ is ‘happy jazz’. The first half of the album is great for the morning, just to give you the boost to start the day. The second half is good for the evening when you want to relax from a busy day at work. Where the title of the album is coming from? That has everything to do with the question that has been asked to Sherry many times. ‘Could you please sing me a song. Sherry?’. “It really makes me feel special and sometimes I still can’t believe it. I am very grateful when people ask me to sing for them, it feels like a gift to me!”

Sherry Dyanne is een zangeres met een bijzondere gave, ze raakt je met haar authentieke en pure stemgeluid. Muzikanten als Candy Dulfer, Michael Franti, Trijntje Oosterhuis, maar ook Eva Jinek en buidspaar Winston Gerschtanowitz en Renate Verbaan hebben het van dichtbij mogen meemaken: als Sherry zingt maakt ze iets bij je los.

Sherry is jazz- en soulzangeres, geboren in Amsterdam uit een mix van Caribisch bloed. Hoewel Sherry Dyanne klinkt als een artiestennaam is het dat niet. Sherry: “Deze namen zijn me met veel liefde gegeven door mijn ouders. Mijn vader houdt van koosnaampjes en mocht bij mijn geboorte de eerste naam kiezen: Sherry, afgeleid van chérie. Mijn moeder koos voor Dyanne als tweede naam. Ze het voorgevoel had dat ik artiest zou worden en vond Dyanne een goede naam daarvoor.”

Stax & Motown

Sherry groeit op met twee jongere broertjes in een gezin waar muziek dagelijks aanwezig is. “Muziek was thuis even belangrijk als stromend water. Mijn vader draaide veel platen; Tom Jones, Aretha Franklin, Kenny Rogers, veel Stax,  Motown, Caribische muziek, maar ook André Hazes en Drukwerk werden regelmatig opgezet. “Ook kon ik eerder dansen dan lopen, mijn vader zette me dan op zijn voeten en danste de Salsa.”

Wiskunde & Erykah Badu

Ondanks de liefde voor muziek koos Sherry voor, geloof het of niet, een carrière als… Wiskunde lerares. “Wiskunde vond ik op school altijd al het leukste vak, en weet je, wiskunde ligt dichter bij muziek dan je denkt!  Alle grote musici uit het verleden waren briljante wiskundigen. Het mechanisme van communiceren met muziek, het notenstelsel, is heel wiskundig.” Sherry gaf  les aan tieners middelbare scholen in Amsterdam en het kwam voor dat leerlingen haar ook vroegen om iets te zingen. Dat maakte haar en hen blij. In diezelfde periode werd Sherry gevraagd om in te vallen voor een kandidaat bij een voorronde van de Soundmixshow met Henny Huisman. Ze zong Tyrone van Erykah Badu en tot haar grote verbazing ging ze door naar de volgende ronde. Sterker nog, ze werd zelfs tweede in de grote finale! Vanaf dat moment is Sherry haar eigen geluid en stijl gaan vormgeven en heeft ze veel in binnen- en buitenland opgetreden.

In 2008 heeft Sherry definitief de geodriehoek aan de wilgen gehangen en is zich volledig op haar muzikale carrière gaan concentreren. Ze stond samen op het podium met onder meer Michael Franti, Candy Dulfer, Trijntje Oosterhuis en George Duke. Ook op jazzfestivals is Sherry een graag geziene gast, zo stond ze onder meer op North Sea Jazz en The Hague Jazz.

Frank Sinatra en Dinah Washington

Sherry’s stijl is een combinatie van heden en verleden, van jazz en soul. “Ik hou van bezieling en craftmanship, dat kun je horen in muziek. Kijk  en luister maar eens naar Frank Sinatra, hoe hij danst en zingt, dat is puur vakmanschap. Daarom voel ik me het meest verwant met muziek die is gemaakt tussen de jaren twintig en zeventig, die was authentiek en gedurfd.  Die authenticiteit en durf zie je ook terug bij mijn muzikale inspiratiebronnen zoals Otis Redding, Billie Holiday en Ramón Valle.” Sherry klinkt alsof ze in het tijdperk van Billie Holiday en Dinah Washington is geboren, toen zingen nog puur was, zonder afleidende improvisaties. Ook wat uiterlijke stijl betreft voelt Sherry zich thuis in een vroeger tijdperk. “Mijn absolute stijlicoon is de Hollywood actrice en zangeres Dorothy Dandridge, zij had een hele mooie, vrouwelijke en tijdloze stijl.”

Eigen vakmanschap

Een eigen album was voor Sherry een lang gekoesterde wens. Ze wilde een album maken met een mix van eigen liedjes en covers. Voor de covers koos ze geen bekende hits, maar prachtige lang vergeten  jazz- en soulnummers.  Zoals ‘Come on a my house’, een song oorspronkelijk gezongen door  de Amerikaanse zangeres en actrice Rosemary Clooney, die later ook is uitgevoerd door  jazz-zangeres Della Reese.

Voor de opnames van ‘Sing me a song’ koos Sherry de Flowriders studio in Amsterdam waar gewerkt wordt met vintage opnameapparatuur en instrumenten voor dat authentieke geluid. Ze nam zelfs ze de gehele productie van het debuutalbum op zich, zonder tussenkomst van een platenlabel. “Als je nog niet eerder een album hebt opgenomen en samenwerkt met anderen ben je geneigd hun adviezen op te volgen. Ik wilde mezelf eerst muzikaal ontdekken als zangeres. Ik wilde niet beïnvloed worden en een pure Sherry Dyanne neerzetten. Ik sluit niet uit dat ik in de toekomst wel met anderen ga samenwerken, maar nu heb ik de kans gegrepen om op een heel natuurlijke manier mijn eigen stijl te ontdekken.”

Voor de selectie van de covers op ‘Sing me a song’ schakelde Sherry de hulp in van haar Facebook-vrienden. Ze konden nummers aandragen en de mooiste verdienden een plek op het album. Drie speciale  nummers zijn op deze manier opgenomen, ‘Wait till you see him’, ‘Billlie’s blues’  en ‘Lost mind’.

Happy Jazz

Wat je hoort op ‘Sing me a song’ is het beste te omschrijven als ‘happy jazz’. “De eerste helft van het album past goed bij de ochtend, als je net even een extra boost nodig hebt om op te starten. Het tweede gedeelte past beter bij de avond, als je lekker wilt relaxen.” Waar komt de titel van het album eigenlijk vandaan? “Dat heeft te maken met gevraagd worden om te zingen “Sherry sing me a song”, dat vind ik heel bijzonder en ik kan het nog steeds niet helemaal geloven. Ik ben heel dankbaar wanneer mensen me vragen om te zingen, dat voelt als een cadeautje voor mij.”
